At Wartburg College, faith and learning go hand in hand. Courses in the Religion and Philosophy Department constitute part of Wartburg’s THRIVE program. Students are also invited to take additional courses in the Religion and Philosophy Department to explore the relation between faith and life, investigate important ethical issues and strengthen awareness of students’ own moral agency, study Christian historical and theological traditions, and gain understanding and respect for other religious traditions.

During May Term, students may participate in field experiences in a church or other non-profit, take part in an urban immersion in Denver, Colo., or travel with faculty and students on international tours to locations in Israel, Japan, Greece, and Germany.

The Religion and Philosophy Department offers a religion major and minor, as well as minors in philosophy and peace and justice.

Intended Student Learning Outcomes

Religion

Students will:

analyze the influence of the Old and New Testaments in history and contemporary life.
analyze relationships among religious beliefs, institutions, and practices with social structures and changing historical contexts.
engage multiple religious and philosophical traditions as part of the common human quest for meaning and purpose.
articulate and critique their own religious and ethical values and engage in constructive dialogue with others who may disagree.
