The Department of Journalism & Communication upholds a long tradition of preparing students for careers in multimedia and public relations. Its multifaceted approach, combining liberal arts with a major program emphasizing hands-on experience, is distinctive among Upper Midwest colleges and universities. The Department of Journalism & Communication is dedicated to the advancement of honest and accurate exchanges of information, ideas, and opinion. The program includes courses in writing, video and audio production, public relations, digital cinema, and sports media. Field experiences and internships are provided in numerous publications, radio and television stations, publishing houses, and public relations offices. More than 400 alumni continue involvement with the Wartburg Department of Journalism & Communication through membership in the Society for Collegiate Journalists and assist students in acquiring internships and professional positions.

Enhancing the program are the KWAR-FM radio station, the Grant Price television studio and production facility, newly renovated production suites, a new podcast production suite, and a strong set of campus media: The Wartburg Trumpet, weekly newspaper; Knight Wire, a multimedia website; Knight Vision, a student produced livestreaming service which offers live coverage of sports, music, chapel services and a host of other campus events; and Knight Vision Films which produces short films created by students. The department also supports the Tower Agency, a student public relations agency, as well as a chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).

Intended Student Learning Outcomes

Students will:

  1. demonstrate command of the ethical and legal foundations of journalism and communication within a multicultural and global society.
  2. comprehend the emerging trends created by developed and developing technologies within a historical, social, and global context.
  3. participate in co-curricular activities which are embedded within the program and in so doing, apply standards of fair and responsible communication practices.
  4. gather, analyze, write and present information effectively within multiple journalism and communication contexts.
  5. demonstrate the practical application of communication media theories, tools, and techniques.
