Environmental Science and Studies

The environmental studies program is an interdisciplinary program designed to enhance student understanding of the importance of integrating scientific, political, ethical, and economic knowledge and values necessary to address issues facing humankind and its role in maintaining the natural environment.

Program objectives:

Focus on breadth of perspective rather than technical aspects.
Develop problem-solving skills pertinent to both scientific and policy arenas.
Provide an interdisciplinary perspective that encourages the integration of economics and the social and natural sciences.
Encourage directed field work in the form of independent studies or internships within a broad array of disciplines pertinent to environmental studies.

Intended Student Learning Outcomes

Students will:

gain perspective on and understand the breadth and depth of environmental issues/problems.
integrate economics, social and natural sciences in order to identify, assess and address complex environmental problems.
critically evaluate field specific (scientific and otherwise) literature, including data.
engage in environmental field experiences, including laboratories, independent studies or internships, that will enhance concepts and practices presented in more traditional curricula.
devise possible solutions to problems associated with the social, economic, and ethical aspects of environmental science and studies.
explain the gravity of environmental degradation and subsequent global implications including social and economic cost.
analyze the role human beings play in creating, addressing, and solving problems related to degradation of the environment.
